CLAREMORE — Students sat engaged while listnening to children’s author David Sargent Jr. Tuesday at Claremont Elementary. The Pine Grove, Ark. native shared the spotlight with his four canine companions as he spoke about how inspiration can be found everywhere.
Claremont students screamed as the three dachsunds Emma, Tatum, Daphne and pomeranian Spike performed tricks from- running through tunnels and over teeter totters to howling for treats.
Sargent then read a few of the stories written about each one’s personality.
Following the assembly, teachers from the audience were asked to hold the dogs for the children to pet. In addition, students were given the opportunity to purchase some of the books for autographs.
Sargent has written more than 40 children’s books such as “I am Spike!” and “Buffy’s Revenge,” his first book about a family dog which was originally written for his mother as a joke.
“When children read these books they realize that they have witnessed similar situations,” said Sargent. “By looking at the pictures, they can use what they see as inspiration for their own stories.”
