Family pet wins top dog in pet calendar contest

By Tom Fink

November 19, 2008 — It’s been said we live in an age of wonders.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Bread, Stevie Wonder, and the seven wonders of the world.

This year, a wonder of a different breed took home the top honor in the 2009 Progress Pet Calendar contest — “Max the Wonder Dog.”

As the top vote-getter, Max will be featured on the cover of the 2009 pet calendar, to be available in December.

Max received the majority of the 15,480 votes cast, helping to raise more than $3,000 benefit the Rogers County Humane Society and Roslyn’s Hope Animal Rescue Inc. More money is expected from actual calendar sales.

In addition to “Max,” the runners-up will be featured, one per month in 2009 calendar, as the “pet of the month.”

Other top vote-getters in the contest were (in order of most votes receive), “Belle Blu,” a Jack Russell terrier, pet of Spirits of 66, “Hex,” a Dauschund, pet of Jeanne White, “Pete,” Red Heeler, pet of Mark and Teresa Smith, “Murphy,” a Samoyed/white shepherd mix, pet of Tim and Kay Morris, “Lily,” a white cat, pet of Ben, Jenny, and Grace Weaver, “Missy,” the Jack Russell Terrier, “Susie Que,” miniature Schnauzer, pet of Dell Sontag, “Missy,” the miniature Pinscher, “Haley,” teacup poodle, pet of Janan Pease, “Oscar,” tuxedo cat, pet of Linda Slatton, “Mary Beth,” Chihuahua,” pet of Jeanne White, and “Candy Chambers,” yellow lab, pet of Lonnie and Pat Chambers.

Although the top vote-getters will be “featured pets,” all contest entrants will appear in the calendar.

All Progress subscribers will automatically receive a 2009 calendar, expected to be readied by mid-December.

Once available, calendars may be purchased for $5 each, with half the proceeds benefiting the RCHS and Roslyn’s Hope.

Donations may still be made to the RCHS through the mail at: RCHS, P.O. Box 1046, Claremore, OK, 74018.
