Grove man convicted in string of convenience store robberies

June 3, 2009 — A Grove man who was found guilty of robbing several convenience stores, including one in Claremore, will spend the next 82 years in federal prison.

A jury in federal court found James Leslie Goodman, 29, guilty in February of eight counts related to the robberies. Four of the original charges were dismissed, according to court documents.

Goodman was arrested in Tulsa in March 2008 in connection with the robberies of A-Mart at 1120 South 107th East Ave. and Kum & Go near 101st and Mingo in Tulsa. One week earlier on March 24, 2008, Goodman, possessing a firearm, robbed Kum & Go on Highway 20 east of Claremore around 3:15 a.m.

During the Claremore robbery, Goodman produced the firearm and demanded money from the register, according to Claremore police. The cashier was ordered on the floor and Goodman left the building. Police also reported the cashier pointed out Goodman in a photo line-up as the armed robber.

Goodman was sentenced to 82 years and one day in federal prison, and ordered to pay $1,379.86 in restitution to Kum & Go in Claremore, $200 to A-Mart in Tulsa and $200 to The Woodshed in Adair. He will also be required to pay a special assessment of $100 on each of the eight counts of which he was found guilty.

Upon release, Goodman will spend five years on supervised release. While in prison, Goodman is ordered to be immediately evaluated for placement in a federal medical center, placed in a facility that will provide him with mental health treatment and designated to a facility as close to Grove as possible.

While the case was open and awaiting trial, Goodman was given a medical evaluation to determine whether he was competent to stand trial.
