Claremore — In recognition of the upcoming National Missing Children’s Day, several local agencies will be partnering with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to participate in the “Take 25” event — a national recognition to encourage parents to take 25 minutes to help make their children safer.
“Childhood is full of rewards and potential risks,” said Mickey Perry, Claremore Chief of Police. “As babies become toddlers, they’re more prone to bumps, bruises, falls, and wandering, and as children grow into teenagers, they become increasingly independent and are more apt to explore, live life, and socialize with less family supervision.
“Fortunately, potential risks children face throughout their lives can be lessened and in some cases avoided when parents and guardians teach safety concepts,” he continued. “While it may not be possible for parents and guardians to be with their children every minute of the day, they can spend time talking to them, setting appropriate limits, and helping them make good choices. Just minutes of prevention can make a huge impact in the life of a child, and that’s what ‘Take 25’ is all about,” he said.
The “Take 25” event will be 5:30-8:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Claremore on Monday, May 18.
At the event will be booths, where parents can obtain DNA kits, “Kids and Strangers” DVDs, “Take 25” safety tips and information, and a “glow stick” vigil for all of the children who are still currently missing from the State of Oklahoma. Glow sticks for vigil will be provided for those wanting to attend the 8 p.m. vigil in the First Baptist sanctuary.
Additionally, the OSBI will announce the winner of the 5th grade poster contest for National Missing Children's Day, and Rebecca Demauro will be speaking to parents and children about her daughter’s abduction.
Weather permitting, Katie Green with Channel 6 News will be on-hand to give out items and discuss weather safety.
“OU Heisman Trophy Winner Sam Bradford recently posed exclusively for a height chart for us to use in conjunction with the event, and it will be used that evening so that children can have their picture taken registering their height,” Perry said.
Also, Home Organizer software featuring m.i.l.k. (Managing Information on Lost Kids) digital id will be handed out.
All items offered at the Take 25 event will be free to parents and caregivers.
Agencies participating in the Claremore “Take 25” event will be the Claremore Police Department, the Claremore Fire Department, the Rogers County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, OSBI, OATH, MADD, Safenet Services, CAC, Tri-County CASA, Corp of Engineers, American Red Cross, and the Rogers County Dept. of Human Services.
