February 22, 2009 — Donna Tapley is the quiet sort of volunteer who works hard and is quick to point out the talents, gifts, and contributions of others.
Rarely will she admit to her own investment of time and energy serving others in her community.
Thursday night, Catoosa Sertoma Club did what Tapley will not do by recognizing her contributions through one of the club’s highest honors, 2008 Sertoman of the Year.
Tapley moved to Catoosa from Derby, Kan. in 1980 and married husband, Mark.
The couple has four sons, Michael, Bryan, Scott and Kevin.
The couple was actively involved in community affairs and volunteered through Boy Scouts with each of the four boys earning Eagle Scout awards
In 1996, Tapley became a Serteen Club sponsor at the high school. In 1998 she became a member of Catoosa Sertoma Club.
Tapley was active in campaigning for the quarter-penny city sales tax to fund the public library.
“She was the driving force to establish the Catoosa Library,” said Sertoma President Tony Wolters. “There were a lot of volunteers involved and support from the city council, but without her drive, it might not have happened.”
She has been honored as Northeast Oklahoma Women’s Conference Volunteer of the Year Golden Rule Award, Catoosa Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award, and the Service to Mankind Award.
This past year after Sertoma Club adopted the D.W. Correll Museum, Tapley conceived the idea to start an annual Catoosa Correll Classic Car Cruise.
The inaugural event brought over 40 antique cars and 150 people to the museum grounds.
Sertoma is the third oldest service organization in the United States. Locally, Catoosa Sertoma has adopted the D.W. Correll Museum ,set up SHOP (Sertoma Handicapped Opportunity Program) 20 plus years ago, helps fund Happy Hands a school for speech and hearing needs children, conducts SHARP (Sertoma Hearing Aid Recycling Program) and more.
Sertoma stands for SERvice TO MAnkind. The club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays each month at 6:30 at the D.W Correll Museum 19934 East Pine in Catoosa.
Since the club adopted the museum, improvements have been underway to fully restore and improve facilities and viewing of the extensive and unique collection of antique automobiles, rocks, minerals, gems, and other displays.
