CATOOSA — The Catoosa Public School system has a lot to be proud of. R. J. Wells Middle School has been selected as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-2013 school year.
They are one of a select group of schools nationwide that Apple is recognizing as demonstrating an exemplary learning environment and are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence.
“This is the third year of the one-to-one MacBook initiative at Wells Middle School,” said Rick Kibbe, CPS Superintendent. “The teachers have received extensive training in the use of the MacBook as well as using technology as a teaching tool. They are making the shift from a traditional teaching format to a project-based, student-led learning environment.”
Schools receiving the designation of Apple Distinguished School meet specific criteria for innovation, leadership and educational excellence.
“Our administration, teachers, and community made a conscience decision to provide a learning environment with advanced technology to prepare students for the 21st century,” said Della Parrish, Middle School Principal. “This team has excelled in providing educational experiences that are innovative, meticulous and will prepare our students for college, career and beyond.”
Through the school’s one-to-one MacBook program, students create iMovies, podcasts, commercials, and music to demonstrate mastery of required skills.
An added bonus is that students have a sense of ownership for their education. Collaborative learning groups allow students to learn from each other which promotes engagement, motivation, and excitement about school.
“In 2008, Mr. Kibbe’s first year as superintendent, Catoosa Public Schools and community leaders joined together to create the concept of Team Catoosa. It represents the idea of the community and school district coming together with a shared vision,” said Kibbe. “This is a great example of what can happen when the community and school system have a full partnership.”
