CLAREMORE — Leon Hershberger defeated Scott Gouard to become the Democratic choice for Rogers County District 3 Commissioner in Tuesday's runoff.

Hershberger will face incumbent Kirt Thacker in the November general election.

Hershberger, who placed second in the July primary election, garnered 642 votes to Gouard's 373, according to the pre-provisional tally from the Rogers County Election Board. He won by a 63 to 37 percent margain.

Hershberger won decisively in every precinct except two where Gouard won by 11 and 8 votes. However in the First Baptist of Inola precinct Hershberger scored an 89 vote win with a 139 to 59 victory.

"I want to thank the District 3 voters for bringing me this far," Hershberger said. "We have some work ahead."

He said his campaign changed some things up following his second-place finish in the primary,

"Voter contact was so important. We knocked on doors. We had friends call friends. Friends knock on friends door. I think that's what brought the voters out."
