Corrections Leadership Academy: Rep. Sherrer completes in-depth training

OKLAHOMA CITY — District 8 Rep. Ben Sherrer  recently completed the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Leadership Academy, an in-depth look at the state’s prison system. 

Sherrer (D-Chouteau) represents Mayes, Rogers and Wagoner Counties in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. 
The Academy is offered to Oklahoma citizens to educate and inform participants about the Department of Corrections. 
It provides a firsthand view of organizational structure, operations, and issues.  
 The Academy attended by  Sherrer began Sept. 13, 2012 and concluded Nov. 8, 2012. 
It is the first and only program of its kind designed for corrections that allow participants access to a “behind the walls,” in-depth look at prison, its programs and policies. 
The Academy is a mixture of classroom lectures and field trips to seven different correctional facilities. 
The class met every Thursday for nine weeks at the Oklahoma Department of Corrections Administration Building in Oklahoma City. 
“The academy is a great opportunity for a close-up view of our corrections system.  I would like to see more policymakers participate in this unique learning experience,” said Sherrer.  
Following completion of the Academy Sherrer was complimentary of DOC staff and administration. 
 “From the administrative offices to the correctional officers on the yard, DOC employees are dedicated public servants stretching taxpayer dollars to achieve positive results.  The legislature must support these hard-working employees with more than words but with policy and funding to give them the tools they need,” he said.
