CPS approves 2013-14 calendar

CLAREMORE — The Claremore Board of Education approved the 2013-2014 school calendar during the district’s monthly board meeting. Members also selected and approved state resolution 553 to maintain a school calendar with a minimum of 1080 hours of intsruction per school year.

The resolution establishes the board’s intent to maintain a calendar with 175 instructional days as well as maintain the flexibility to utilize the state statue allowing the school calendar to consist of at least 1080 hours of instruction. The resolution includes the flexibility of using hours in order to make adjustments in the school calendar should inclement weather cause school closings anytime during the scheduled 175 instructional days.
“Claremore’s calendar will include 175 instructional days, however extending the length of the school day to make up for instructional hours lost from cancellations due to weather, or deciding to simply meet the 1080 hours will be considered if such inclement weather cancellations occur,” said Claremore Superintendent Mike McClaren. “Last year, we lost a day for snow and didn’t make it up because we had built-in provisions that didn’t allow the district to count hours in case of weather.
The school board has built in days for Jan. 20, as well as Feb. 17 and April 18 in case snow days need to be made up.
Classes for the 2013-2014 school year are scheduled to begin Aug. 15.
