Claremore's public dumpsite closing at month’s end

July 4, 2009 — In an economy that continues to be sluggish, City of Claremore officials have decided to save on operational costs with the closure of the city’s public dumpsite on Ramm Road.

“The dumpsite has been a service that has been provided at no cost to Claremore Sanitation customers,” said Cassie Sowers, marketing director, City of Claremore. “While the City was developing its budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year, city leaders determined that the continued operation (of the dump site) is not financially sustainable, given the current economy and the city’s need to invest in infrastructure improvements.”

Cost to maintain and operate Claremore’s public dump site during the 2008-09 fiscal year was $90,000, Sowers said.

By no longer operating the site, the City will transfer the monies saved into the general fund to help support municipal operations, such as police and fire departments, the Claremore Senior Center, the Will Rogers Library, among others.

Open for three years, the dumpsite had previously been a 24-hour site, but had to move to restricted hours last year because of illegal dumping and overuse.

For roughly a year, the site has been open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays — hours which the site will continue through the end of July, Sowers said.

“Beginning in August, City sanitation customers may still dispose of bulk or brush items by scheduling a curbside pickup, at a minimal cost to the customer,” she said.

City of Claremore’s public dumpsite is located behind the Electric Building and across the street from Claremore Animal Control, at 724 Ramm Road.

To schedule bulk and brush pickups, contact the City of Claremore’s utility billing office at 341-0456. Any questions regarding the closure of the dumpsite should be made by calling 341-8842.
