Home sweet homestead exemption for Rogers Countians

CLAREMORE — Rogers County residents don’t have to catch a Leprechaun and demand his pot of gold to benefit financially. The filing deadline for saving precious property tax dollars is March 15 for many property owners, according to County Assessor Melissa Anderson.

Those March 15 deadlines include  2010 Homestead Exemptions, Double Homestead Exemptions and the Senior Valuation Freeze.

Double Homestead Exemption is limited to those whose gross household earnings for 2009 were no more than $20,000.  Proof of 2009 income is required. The Double Homestead form must be filed between Jan. 1 and March 15.

Also due by March 15 are Business Renditions and Farm Renditions. The Assessors Office will stay open until 7 p.m. on the 15th.

The Business and Farm Renditions include inventory and a list of personal property equipment.

“We do that just in case somebody can’t get off work,” said Anderson. “To keep them from getting a penalty or anything.”

There is no age limit on double homesteads. Seniors do get special exception, however. Anyone who is 65 or older and has filed for double homestead the year before, will be automatically carried over each year just like a regular homestead exemption.

The Senior valuation freeze  must be filed at this time, also. 2009 proof of income is required and the head of household or spouse must have been 65 years of age as of Jan. 1 to receive this benefit.

The freeze is limited to those whose gross household earnings were no more than $57,600 for the year 2009.

The Assessor’s Office can also assist residents with special tax refunds.

“We help people fill those out as a courtesy,” said Anderson.

Deadlines on the tax refunds are June 30.

The sales tax refunds for those earning less than $20,000 per year.  Persons age 65 or older with dependents, or  who have proof of disability may have household earnings up to $50,000 per household.

The Property tax refund tax credit on paid property taxes for those with disabilities or who are over the age of 65 with a  gross household income under $12,000 can also find assistance at the Assessor’s office.

Further details and requirements for both of these state sponsored tax refunds is available through the County Assessor’s office located in the Rogers County Courthouse. Office hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. or call 341-3290 for more information.
