OOLOGAH —
The quest for the Class 4A state softball championship begins today for the No. 10 Oologah Lady Mustangs.
Back in the spotlight for the first time since 1999, the Lady Mustangs square off at 1 p.m. against No. 4 Purcell (34-4).
Oologah (30-12) becomes the third team from Rogers County to battle for state supremacy in fastpitch softball.
Last week, top-ranked Washington knocked out Verdigris to end the Lady Cardinals’ season with a 30-10 overall record.
The other team from the county competing today at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium is the Class 6A No. 4-ranked Owasso Lady Rams, who have a 37-2 overall record.
The Lady Rams tangle with No. 8 Edmond North (32-8) at 3 p.m.
Oologah’s game will be on Field 4, while Owasso will compete on Field 3.
The Lady Mustangs are coached by Andrea Scott-Vaughan, who excelled in high school softball at Claremore.
Also, Oologah is riding a 15-game winning streak and are led by the lone senior Delaney Gray.
The other 4A quarterfinal match-ups include: No. 1 Blanchard against Bethany at 11 a.m.; No. 15 Fort Gibson against No. 2 Tuttle at 3 p.m. and No. 3 Berryhill against No. 12 Harrah at 5 p.m.
Semifinals will start at noon on Friday with the state championship taking place at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Zebras hungry for victory

“We’ve been close in a lot of games,” Zebra head coach Rob Gilbreath said, “... just haven’t been able to finish or catch a break.”
At 7:30 p.m. tonight in Grove, the Zebras are hoping to get a heavy monkey off their back and end a two-game losing in District 5A-4 play. -

The best two Class 3A teams in the Tulsa-Metro area clash tonight for a shot at a district championship.
Metro Christian (7-0 overall, 3-0 District 3A-6) hosts Verdigris (7-0 overall, 4-0 district) at 7:30 p.m. in what is expected to be an offensive shootout. -
