Autumn Wood brings ‘dedicated’ Alzheimer’s care to Claremore

CLAREMORE —

Beginning Nov. 1, Autumn Wood Memory Care will give Alzheimer’s and dementia patients the opportunity to receive long-term care in Claremore.
The new center offers five 12-bedroom neighborhoods, each with a private bathroom, a dining area, spa and hot tub, activity space and a fenced-in outside yard for exercise.
“Our goal is to make Autumn Wood feel like home and not an institution while engaging patients in social, hands-on therapy to help stimulate motor and social skills,” said Mathew Snyder, administrator.
Snyder said there is no upper limit on care at Autumn Wood.
Consultant for Autumn Wood Chuck Werth is in charge of a similar project in West Des Moines, Iowa.
“This is something special,” said Werth.  “The Claremore center is one of only a few of its kind in this part of the state.”
He said treatment for Alzheimer’s disease has come a long way over the years but there is still so much to learn about the disease.
“The key is to identify and generate moments of joy as much as possible for those suffering, including the family members. Wayne (owner of Autumn Wood and Wood Manor), wants that for everyone involved,” said Werth.
Owner Wayne Wood has worked in assisted living for over 30 years. Both he and his sister, Janice Shively, administrator, opened the new Wood Manor in 2006 and believed that an Alzheimer’s care center was a definite must for this region.
“We realized the need for this type of assisted living in the community and then took the necessary steps to make it happen.
Shively said the process started in 2009 and construction took about a year.
Autumn Wood is currently taking applications for employees with professional care experience.
