Municipal elections filing period set

CLAREMORE — The 2013 election year will be kicked off with several candidates filing for local municipality offices. 

“These should be highly sought positions because they have a larger impact on the daily lives of Rogers County citizens,” Election Board Secretary Julie Dermody said. “We should want people to serve that will serve us best.”
Declarations of candidacy can be filed, beginning 8 a.m. on Feb. 4 at the Rogers County Election Board, located at 415 W. 1st Street in Claremore. The filing period will end at 5 p.m. on Feb. 6.
“We as a nation are so involved nationally that we forget what is happening locally,” Dermody said. “These elections are an opportunity for people to make an impact locally, on matters that sometimes affect us the most.”
City council seats for several communities will be open to candidates. 
Claremore will have open positions in Wards 1 through 4 and each candidate will serve four years if elected. Catoosa has three openings for Wards 1, 2 and 5. Those positions will serve until 2017. 
One additional opening is for Ward 3, however that individual will only serve until 2015.
Verdigris has an opening for trustees in Ward 1 and 3. The city will also have an opening for a town clerk. 
All positions will serve a four-year term. Chelsea is seeking tow trustees for four years terms, two trustees for two-year terms and one town treasurer to serve for four years.
Oologah is looking to fill trustee positions for Ward 2 and 4, both will serve four-year terms.
Inola is seeking a town treasurer and two town trustees both elected for a four-year term.
The municipal offices at stake in Claremore, Catoosa, Verdigris, Chelsea, Oologah and Inola will be filled in the non-partisan general election scheduled for April 2, according to Dermody.
“It is so important that we start looking at our local elections as a community and turn out to vote,” Dermody said.
