Building codes get a boost

CLAREMORE — Claremore City Council is making more updates to the building code.

The amendments to the city ordinances are designed to match the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code.

The council passed four amendments this week, including changes to the International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Fuel Code and International Fire Code.

“We are just trying to provide a way for the city to stay in line with the state,” Atzbach said.

In 2009, the state of Oklahoma formed the Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission.

This commission determines the minimum residential and commercial construction code requirements that are to be enforced throughout the state.

“The state is just trying to get everyone under the same code,” Atzbach said.

Councilor Bill Flanagan said, “Did we give the people that are affected by this, notice of the change.”

The code changes should have a limited impact on builders and developers, as they are already required to meet the state requirements, according to Atzbach.

“We are playing catch up then,” said Councilor Don Purkey.

Atzbach simply replied, “Yes.”

The action by the council brought the City of Claremore into compliance with state statute.
