Local chef hosts cooking camp for kids

CLAREMORE — Local chef Linda Coons will be the instructor for the upcoming Cooking Camp for children ages 9-13 July 19-23 at Claremore Community Center.

Sponsored by the Claremore Park and Recreation Department, the camp will focus on basic meal preparation. Camp will be held 9-11 a.m. daily. Cost to attend is $50.

Coons will be teaching safety rules and tips for the kitchen along with basic cooking skills. Each child will learn how to prepare meals, table manners, and why it is important to eat the right food.

Coons is an award winning chef and has been requested back for the third year to the Food and Wine Magazine event at Pebble Beach, Calif. She has volunteered with the annual Taste of Home Cooking School and performed on the cooking stage at the Woman’s Expo, as well as other local charity events.

Linda and her husband Dennis own Country Inn Bed and Breakfast.

To pre-register for the camp or for more information, call 342-2522.

  • Ice pops for grown-ups

With all the super-premium ice creams out there, you may not have the motivation to make your own. Or the equipment. But it is perfectly possible to make delicious frozen treats without an ice-cream maker. Sorbet, for example. Or granita (a shaved-ice confection with the consistency of a snow cone). Or ice pops.

  • Father's Day gets all up in your grill Is it a good thing or a bad thing that the traditional Mother’s Day meal is breakfast in bed, while the traditional food for Father’s Day is grilled meat? On the downside, Dad doesn’t get to loll around and get waited on, but, on the upside, he gets to fire up the ol’ Weber and cook something substantial, charred and tasty. He gets to drink beer with it. Well, “It is what it is,” as current parlance goes. It’s almost Father’s Day: Buy meat.
