CLAREMORE —
The Claremore Police Department received a snuggly donation from Wayne and Sue Ping Monday.
The Pings in cooperation with the Belk store in Owasso donated brown teddy bears for local children.
The donation serves the children of the City of Claremore that may find themselves in adult situations, like car accidents, domestic abuse or other calls serviced by police officers.
Officers and office staff give the bears or other stuffed animals to children in and out of the field.
“Sometimes children just come to the station while their parents file police reports,” said Amber Brassfield.
Brassfield gives the children stuffed toys when available to make them feel more comfortable sitting in the waiting room.
In the field, officers give the comforting gift as a way to limit a child’s anxiety during the potentially stressful situation.
“The officers know how important it is and that kids in stress need something to hug,” said Claremore Police Chief Stan Brown.
The Pings have worked with domestic abuse groups and Tri-County CASA to help children in the past. They have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and know how kids love to hug stuffed animals.
“No kids should be without something to hug,” Sue Ping said.
The department has been accepting donations like this for many years. Donations can be made year around at the police department. Officials ask that donated items be clean or preferable new stuffed animals.
