Roosa, Catalayah elementaries holding carnivals Saturday

CLAREMORE — Stuart Roosa and Catalayah Elementary will each present their 2nd annual school carnival from 5-8 p.m. on Saturday. The two sites will have numerous baskets available for purchase along with inflatables, face painting and games.

Tickets for the basket raffle will be on sale for one dollar each and games for 25 cents.  Concessions will also be available to the public and include hot dogs/chili dogs, nachos, popcorn, shaved ice, cotton candy and more.
“We have such a dedicated group of people working together to make this all come together,” said Carnival Committee member Dana Abshere.  “Teachers have put in countless hours to make this night a grand success.”
Abshere said parents and teachers would love to challenge the community to come and support both events.
“I would love to see in a time when our nation is going through hardship financially, a small town like Claremore come together and show our students that we can give them what they need,” she said. 
Last year, Roosa earned approximately $5,000 from the carnival, including $980 coming from Melton’s Chrysler Drive for the Kids program.
Proceeds from this year’s event will be put towards saving for state-of-the-art playground equipment.
“The new playground will service not only the students of Roosa but also the neighborhood children,” said Abshere. 
Monetary donations will also be accepted for those who cannot make the carnival.
Catalayah Elementary has been collecting donations from Claremore, Tulsa and Owasso for the past two months.  Last year’s carnival earned a total of $10,405 including $1060 from the Drive for the Kids fundraiser.
The PTO board used $4,000 of the proceeds to send more than 400 students on area field trips.  Catalayah’s library received $1,000 for audio/CD books and $5,000 went towards purchasing the school’s gazebo and supplies for teachers.
“This year, our PTO would like to see the money go towards student field trips again,” said Catalayah PTO President Stacye Bacon.  “We would also like to surprise our teachers with some extra classroom money.”
Bacon said the board has been holding fundraisers all year to pay for the entire carnival.  
“It is an honor to work with these families and the school,” said Bacon.
