CLAREMORE —
State Labor Commissioner Lloyd Fields commended Pelco Structural President Phil Albert and his management team for superior safety standards. Fields and staff members visited Claremore this week to present Pelco a special flag and commendations for achieving the SHARP designation.
SHARP is the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program and includes a set of requirements that fewer than 40 companies a year are able to meet. Albert and his team pursued the designation voluntarily.
But the company president said the Pelco employees deserve the credit for making safety happen.
“There’s not a small business in Oklahoma that wants an employee to get hurt,” said Albert. But he said it takes real effort and team work to make safety a reality.
Thomas Hudson, Health and Safety Mangers and Larry Barry, Pelco Production Manager are part of the administrative team that worked with employees to implement high safety standards. They, too, said employees deserve the credit for achieving the prestigious SHARP designation.
“We only give this out to 40 different companies and sometimes we do less than that,” said Lloyd.
Commenting on the cleanliness of the manufacturing footprint, Dennis Cummings of the Oklahoma Department of Labor told the Progress that Pelco is a very special place.
“I know you didn’t sweep it up for me,” said Lloyd of the plant. He said Pelco implements “quality, safety training” and a strong commitment to customer service.
Pelco was also presented a universal safety flag in recognition of its achievements.
Albert said he appreciates his employees and the cooperative relationship within the company. He is known to foster a supportive, family-friendly atmosphere, often hiring siblings and other relatives and encouraging heavy involvement in community affairs. Pelco commonly sponsors many community events and Albert, along with wife Jo, is a very familiar face within the community.
He said Pelco’s decision to participate voluntarily in the safety program was a smart move for the company. In February Pelco Structural celebrated its five year anniversary and announced a partnership with HD Supply Utility. That partnership came about after a “rigorous” investigation by HD Supply Utility that examined Pelco’s safety records and standards along with customer satisfaction and other factors. The alliance is expected to increase Pelco employment and double business.
