Transformer explosion shuts off Claremore water supply

CLAREMORE — An electrical transformer explosion at the Claremore Water Department has cut off the city's water supply. City crews are working to restore power to the water department as soon as possible.

The Claremore Fire Department responded to a transformer explosion call around 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Claremore Water Department. CFD firefighters used a dry chemical extinguisher to put out the small flames burning the surrounding grass.

“If it had been any closer to the building we would have had a big problem,” said firefighter Brandon McClain.

Within five minutes firefighters had the flames under control. “After the explosion there were some small flare ups but not anything too bad, just a lot of harmful smoke,” said McClain. Claremore Public Works Director Darryl Golbek said the cause of the explosion and lenghth of repairs are unknown at this time. “Crews are working hard to get water usage back up and running,” said Golbek. “We do have stored tanks available but we still ask everyone to conserve and use water sparingly.”
