William S. “Bill” and Faye (Wood) Whitenton recently celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. They were married in Tahlequah on June 24, 1937. They are also celebrating their birthdays. Bill was 93 on June 10, and Faye will celebrate her 90th birthday on July 21.
Bill was born and raised in Stillwater. Faye was born and raised in Stilwell. They met and married in Stilwell where Bill was working for the Agriculture Adjustment Administration.
After they married, they lived in Stillwater for a short time. They moved to Broken Arrow where Bill managed farms. In 1944, Bill became the County Extension Agent for Adair County and they moved back to Stilwell. He was transferred to Claremore as the Rogers County Extension Agent in 1945. Bill retired in 1972 after 27 years with the Extension Service. Bill served on the Claremore City Council for four years in the 1970’s. He was chosen as Claremore’s Man of the Year in 1970. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow Rotarian.
Bill and Faye have three daughters: Gail Highfield and husband Rex of Tulsa, Nancy Rumbaugh and husband Bob, and Patty Cobb and husband Bruce, all of Claremore. They have eight grandchildren: Bill Cobb and wife Kimber, Mike Rumbaugh, Amy Evans and husband Roger, all of Claremore; Brenda Highfield, Tom Highfield, Carol Moshire and husband Matt, all of Tulsa, Clay Cobb and wife Stephanie of Leavenworth, Kan., and Brian Highfield of Kansas City, Mo. They also have 10 great-grandchildren.
